My Story

As the Director and Head Tailor at Matthew Stanley Bespoke I can boast a decade of determined and unwavered commitment to becoming a bespoke tailor!

With a broad skill base acquired and proven, apprenticeship learning too and the academic qualifications achieved  I can say in 2024 goal achieved!

To briefly share my story with you as prospective clients.

At the tender age of 11 I decided that I wanted to become a tailor and was fortunate enough to join a Young Designers Programme run by an independent City & Guilds centre; Inkberrow Design IDC.

Whilst on their programme I progressed through from their young designer's club onto formal City & Guilds learning gaining an array of qualifications in pattern cutting, tailoring and millinery.

I went on to volunteer to teach and mentor at this establishment with their up coming young designers and participated in regular catwalks to showcase both mine and their designs and construction.

The absolute highlights of this part of my journey were in 2019 and 2021 where you will see from the videos shared (acknowledge source) I progressed through to the finals of Savile Row's bi-annual Golden Shears apprentice tailor's competition.  In fact in 2019 I was, and still remain, their youngest ever finalist at  just 15 years old.

2019 also saw me receive the prestigious accolade of a medal of merit from the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers.

These achievements were secured  in parallel to also achieving the mainstream GCSE and A Level qualifications needed to progress to my next step.

I chose to study a BA Hons Fashion Degree at Gloucester University and again secured a prestigious opportunity as one of their students who constructed bespoke shirts for interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen for his televised series of Channel 4's Changing Rooms.

Not wanting to neglect my traditional bespoke tailoring construction and pattern cutting skills whilst throwing myself into the world of Fashion Design I also secured an apprenticeship to run in parallel to my degree at 5th generation tailors Robinsons Tailors.

I have contemporary flare matched by the highest quality construction skills and can bring to life your aspired and unique bespoke designs.

So please reach out to me and discuss your bespoke garment choices because I am ready to deliver unrivalled contemporary styled lines with the utmost benchmark handcraftsmanship construction.

Yours, Matthew Stanley
